It consists of an entrance examination and professional development programs once successful candidates start their career with the UN.

United Nations Young Professionals Programme Benefits
Candidates who pass the YPP examination will be offered a two-year fixed-term contract at the start of their professional career with the UN. After two years, they will be granted a continuing contract, subject to satisfactory performance.
Candidates can also be offered a temporary contract while they are waiting for an available post. Such a contract is not a fixed-term two-year contract for the purposes of the YPP and does not carry the expectation of renewal after the expiry of the contract. Temporary contracts are an effective way to gain experience in the organization while waiting to be recruited to a vacant P-1/P-2 post.

United Nations Young Professionals Programme Eligibility
The YPP examination is held once a year and is open to nationals of countries participating in the annual recruitment exercise. To apply for the YPP program, applicants must be a national of an eligible country listed above and meet the following criteria:
- Have at least a first level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or at least a three-year equivalent) in the main course of study listed in the Education Section of this Job Opening;
- Be 32 years old or younger (born on or after January 1, 1991);
- Be fluent in either English or French; and
- Have the nationality of a participating Member State.

How to Apply for the United Nations Young Professionals Programme
Eligible candidates who would like to apply for this North America opportunity must click on the apply button below and follow the given instructions to submit their applications.
Applications will be screened to determine if they meet the basic eligibility requirements (i.e., nationality, age, education, language). If more than 40 applicants from the same country are eligible for an exam area, those applicants will be screened and ranked based on the highest level of education completed, knowledge of official UN languages, and relevant work experience.
If the exam occurs in two stages, then 60 applicants per country/per exam area may be invited to the first exam stage, with a maximum of 40 per country/per exam area proceeding to the second stage.
